Recent viewings from HK-side

Supermodel (2004)

Kind of a Chinese take on Zoolander. Well actually, a wholesale ripoff. But sort of funny, if only because the ludicrously over-dressed models looked like a Chinese take on the P-Funk Allstars.

Private Eyes (1976)

The Hui brothers destroy all in an unparalled wackfest.

Fantasia (2003)

A parody consisting of around 75% of the Private Eyes (1976). The rest of the plot involves the Twins. Ay yah! Louis Koo subs for Sam Hui, which is ridiculous given that Sam is twice the man Louis will ever be. Jesus!

Kung Fu Mahjong (2005)

In which recycling King Wong Jing takes Kung Fu hustle, melds it with popular soap Square Pegs and turns out a sort of sub-par God of Gamblers rip-off.

Marry a Rich Man (2002)

In which Sammi Cheng tries to marry a rich fella and ends up with mechanic Richie Ren. Not as good (if memory serves) as their 2000 team-up Summer Holiday (no, not that Summer Holiday: the songs are better).

Divergence (2005)

Fruity Aaron Kwok as a cop haunted by his missing ex who refuses to shower or change his clothes after someone he was protecting got shot. He stinks the place up for weeks. With that nice curvy-nosed Daniel Wu as an assassin, and Ekin Cheng in particularly natty glasses.

House of Fury (2005)

In which the great Anthony Wong slums it (actually, like Klaus Kinski his career is more about slumming than good stuff) in a teen-pitched actioner with Daniel Wu again, and the Twins! Better than it sounds, but not really that good. Yuen Woo Ping did the fight choreography, which is probably the best thing about this.

New Police Story (2005)

A very old Jackie Chan tries to revive his career by doing a film with trendy youngsters (would you believe... Daniel Wu and the Twins??). Sadly, this excerpt in the venerable Police Story series lacks Maggie Cheung hilariously falling off a moped, or Michelle Yeoh riding her motorbike onto a moving train (in Malaysia!), but it does have snivelling Nicholas Tse playing Jackie's life coach (go on Jackie, slap him!). Since this film has a chance of ending up in NZ video shops, this is a serious warning: don't watch it.
