Currently Venus is setting in the western sky, followed by Jupiter. I note this because Venus is spectacularly bright and well worth admiring. Tonight there was the treat of Venus and a very new crescent moon in close proximity. One of those moments for which the word 'scintillating' was invented.
It's been quite a year for planets, with all the visible planets making an appearence save for Mars. There was also Jupiter's occultation by the moon in June, followed a couple of weeks later by the conjunction of Venus and Mercury (with Saturn hanging around nearby).
And of course there has been the continuing stellar science of the missions to Saturn (Cassini-Huygens) and Mars (rovers Spirit and Opportunity). Marsvellous!
