Review: Back to Basics by Christina Aguilera

Nah I'm shitting ya.

But has anyone heard this? So far she's spent her career wasting a hell of a great voice1 on awful songs, but apparently most of the first disc in this 2-disc set is produced by DJ Premier.

1. I'm serious.

Do a search on youtube for her doing a torch song with Herbie Hancock playing piano, just the two of them.. Pretty bloody clear indication of her vocal talent. But could be all a bit Satriani... (what?)

As for the new album, I *think* you'd love it. Lead single, 'Ain't No Other Man', is up-tempo and driving with a super stripped back beat. Pretty unlike any other Premier stuff, even ignoring the club tempo it has a bit of a stop/start thing going based around big horn stabs a la 'Papa's Got A brand New Bag'... Can't really see how you could dislike it.

Rest of the album (only heard first disc) reminded me plenty of Joss Stone, wrt soul gestures, and you liked her stuff, eh? I thought it came off as a pretty desperate plea for credibility, trying to position herself as part of the canon of black music.

OK, I've now listened to it. Lots of it is really good, musically speaking. The firt disk is a bunch of producers, mainly DJ Premier but also Rich Harrison and some other slobs. The second disk is entirely produced by that bitch from 4 Non Blondes, and has a completely different sound.

The main problem is that tho Christina has a great, huge, Etta James-style voice, her phrasing is appalling. She exhibits zero personality. She also tends to over-use the exact same flourishes from song to song.

There are a LOT of shout-outs and samples of her fave singers. Weirdly there are also a lot of samples of shout-outs to her favourite singers - announcers saying "Louie Armstrong!" or "Billie Holiday!" or whatever.

There's also a REALLY embarrassing track which mostly consists of voice messages from fans about how Christina's music "saved my life". Last night a DJ saved MY life.

Overall, I like Joss Stone better because although her lyrics are as poor as Christina's, she at least shows some grit in her singing.

teeheehee.. "A bit Satriani."

What a wonderful term to describe that certain level of shallow flourish...

I sometimes wonder if Gift of the Gab is a bit Satriani.
