"Everyone should see Desperate Living."
It's very true. Why don't you go watch it now?
Posted by pearce at August 18, 2005 4:01 PMWhat is it?
Posted by: Martin at August 18, 2005 11:55 PMIt's the touching story of a shrill paranoid and an obese thief travelling to the magical kingdom of Mortvile to escape persecution.
Posted by: Pearce at August 19, 2005 8:44 AMSo, a film, then?
Posted by: Martin at August 19, 2005 10:13 AMIt's more than a mere film. It's the Citizen Kane of depraved lesbian melodramas!
It's John Waters's last X-rated movie - the only one without Divine.
It's probably the best movie he ever made, if you can stomach it.
Posted by: Pearce at August 19, 2005 12:19 PMIt was the first John Waters' movie I watched all the way through and it is incredibly hilarious. After an opening 2 minutes of what looks like patchy acting and shitty production values, it launches into a FULL.ON. perverse comedy about hysteria and sexual neurosis, and after slamming into the filthiest fairytale you could imagine, ends with a damning indictment of both fascism AND democracy.
Desperate Living rocks.

Actually, do you have it on dvd? I think it would be fun to spring on flatmates... we presently have no video
Yeah, I do actually. I bet they'd love it.
Posted by: Pearce at August 23, 2005 8:52 PMNo, we wouldn't
Posted by: cal at August 24, 2005 10:34 PMYes, you really, really would.
Posted by: Pearce at August 25, 2005 9:57 AMI'm 100% certain that it's a completely different sort of movie to whatever you're assuming, Cal.
In fact, I'm 100% certain that it's a completely different sort of movie to anything you've ever seen before. Unelss you've already seen one of John Waters's pre-Hairspray movies.
