More CD copying bizzo
March 22, 2004
Universal Music (NZ) weighs in on the proposed changes to NZ Copyright Law; specifically, allowing users to format shift (e.g. copying a CD for use in the car) for personal use.
Presumably UMusic live under a rock, and assume that people currently buy as many copies of a given CD as they need, and never, never make mix CDs for parties and the like.
Presumably they also aren't aware of their Canadian or French colleauges, who somehow manage to scrape by in countries which allow copying for personal use; and where the respective recording industries collect levies on blank CDs and MP3 players.
And if UMusic sincerely believe that it's up to them to make laws about whether "any music CD" (any?) can be copied, then I heartily invite them to Jump Aboard The Clue Train.
